The slogan of the Working Class Student Union is, “Advocacy. Support. Resources. Activism.” As demonstrated by this slogan, the key to WCSU’s mission is providing services to UW-Madison’s working-class students and their allies. Our offered services are spread among the four committees of WCSU: advocacy, support, resources, and activism.
The Support Committee works closely with the Advocacy and Resource Committees to provide immediate services, as well as ongoing programs for working-class students. A key service provided by this committee is a discussion group for working-class identified individuals that will create a safe space for individuals to share their common experiences. The Support Committee will also work to address issues with UW-Madison’s campus climate by identifying university agencies, departments, and programs, as well as other student organizations that are working-class friendly. Through the development of a survey tool and staff/membership training, the committee can identify areas of inclusiveness that need further development and then provide the necessary remedial training. Once a list of organizations has been compiled, it will be made available on the WCSU website, in our office, at our resource events, and to our allied organizations.
The Resources Committee handles all resource production and distribution for the Working Class Student Union that occurs in our office, as well as throughout campus. The WCSU office will serve as a resource center for all working-class identified students and their allies. The resource center will distribute information and brochures about campus and community organizations that are pertinent to working-class students. In addition to already established resources, the Resources Committee will develop resources specifically for working-class students to fill gaps in provided services and information. This information is essential to ensuring the retention of working-class students at UW-Madison.
